🐢 A Special Sight on the Trail at Walter B. Jacobs Nature Center! 🐢
Today we were lucky to witness something amazing at the trailhead behind Walter B. Jacobs Nature Center a female turtle digging her nest to lay eggs! Based on the markings and shell pattern, this appears to be a slider turtle, likely a Red-eared Slider or Yellow-bellied Slider, both common native pond turtles in our region.
Each spring and early summer, female turtles leave the safety of the water and travel onto land to find the perfect sunny patch of soil where they can bury their eggs. She uses her back legs like little shovels to carefully dig a flask-shaped nest chamber. Once finished, she will lay her eggs, cover them, and return to the water. Nature does the rest!
🌞 Fun Turtle Facts:
• Turtle eggs usually hatch in 60–90 days, depending on weather and soil temperature.
• The temperature of the nest can influence whether hatchlings become male or female.
• Baby turtles hatch underground and dig their way to the surface on their own.
• Many turtles return year after year to nest in the same general area.
🌿 Please Respect Wildlife Moments Like This 🌿
If you witness a turtle nesting, enjoy the moment from a distance and avoid crowding, touching, or moving her. Disturbance can cause her to abandon the nest site.
🐾 Important for Pet Owners:
If she successfully lays eggs, we will mark the area so visitors can help keep dogs and other pets away from the nest and avoid accidental damage.
Nature is full of incredible stories happening quietly around us every day — thank you for helping us protect them. 💚 ... See MoreSee Less

🌎🌿 Happy Earth Day! 🌿🌎
A huge thank you to the Bayou Chapter of the Ozark Society for coming out to hike with us today! It was a wonderful way to celebrate our planet—walking the trails, enjoying the beauty of nature, and sharing a love for the great outdoors with such a fantastic group of people.
Earth Day reminds us how important it is to protect and appreciate the wild places around us, and there’s no better way to honor that than by spending time outside with friends who care deeply about conservation and adventure.
Thank you for your support, your enthusiasm, and for making today so special. We hope to see you back on the trails again soon! 🍃🥾💚
